Safety first: gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm

If you smell gas or your CO alarm sounds:

  1. Get everyone outside. Do not flip switches, unplug appliances, or use phones inside.
  2. Call 911 from a safe distance.
  3. Then call your gas utility. Xcel Energy customers can find the gas emergency number on xcelenergy.com. Do not call HVAC first for a gas smell or sounding CO alarm.

More on furnace CO safety: furnace carbon monoxide safety guide. JC sells CO alarms; a tune-up includes a furnace safety inspection.

Is your no-heat problem an emergency?

Call now if…

  • Indoor temperature is dropping while it's freezing outside
  • An infant, older adult, pregnant person, or medically fragile person is home
  • The breaker keeps tripping when the furnace tries to start
  • Burning or electrical smell at the furnace
  • Water leaking from the furnace
  • Any gas smell or CO alarm → safety box above first

Can often wait until morning if…

  • One room is cool but the furnace is still running and the house is warm enough
  • Weather is mild and no one at home is vulnerable
  • You can keep pipes and people safe overnight with the tips below

Not sure? Call (720) 779-7263 and describe what's happening.

What to do in the first 15 minutes

  1. Thermostat on Heat, a few degrees above room temperature; fresh batteries if needed.
  2. Furnace power switch ON; check the furnace breaker once.
  3. On high-efficiency units, check outdoor PVC vents for snow or ice.
  4. If nothing changes, stop resetting and call.

Keep your home safe while you wait

Protect the pipes

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls
  • Let faucets drip a slow cold stream
  • Keep garage doors closed if water lines run through the garage

Tips adapted from Denver Water cold-weather guidance and the American Red Cross frozen-pipes page. How long a house can go without heat depends on outdoor temperature and the home — there is no single safe number of hours. Focus on pipes and vulnerable people.

Heat safely (and what not to use)

Close unused rooms; use blankets and layers. Electric space heaters only if listed for indoor use, plugged into a wall outlet (not an extension cord), and clear of bedding. Never use a gas oven, stove, grill, camp stove, or unvented fuel-burning heater indoors — carbon monoxide risk (Denver Fire Dept guidance on denvergov.org).

What happens when you call JC Mechanical

Call (720) 779-7263. We'll ask what's going on, your address, and whether this is after hours. A technician diagnoses first. You get a quote before repair work starts — nothing proceeds until you say yes. If repair doesn't make sense long-term, we'll talk repair vs. replace honestly.

Common reasons furnaces fail on cold nights

  • Igniter — won't light, so no heat
  • Flame sensor — dirty or failed; burner shuts down
  • Pressure switch / inducer — often when snow blocks PVC vents
  • Control board — furnace won't sequence correctly
  • Blower motor — little or no air through the ducts

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a furnace emergency?

No heat in freezing weather, vulnerable people at home, repeated breaker trips, burning/electrical smells, water from the furnace, or gas smell / CO alarm. When in doubt, call (720) 779-7263.

What should I do first when my furnace stops in winter?

Thermostat on Heat, power switch and breaker once, check outdoor PVC vents for snow. Then call — don't keep hitting reset.

Who do I call for emergency furnace repair in Denver?

JC Mechanical at (720) 779-7263. We cover south Denver and the metro cities on our service-area pages.

Is it safe to use a space heater until the tech arrives?

Only listed electric space heaters used carefully. Never gas ovens, grills, camp stoves, or unvented fuel heaters indoors — CO hazard.

How do I keep pipes from freezing if the heat is out?

Open exterior-wall cabinets, drip cold water, keep garage doors closed if lines run there (Denver Water / Red Cross). Focus on pipes and people, not a fixed "hours without heat" number.

How long can a house go without heat in Denver?

It depends on outdoor temperature, insulation, and the house. There is no single safe number of hours.

Should I shut off the gas if I smell gas or my CO alarm goes off?

Leave first. Call 911 from outside, then the gas utility. Do not stay inside to shut valves or flip switches.

Do you charge extra for nights, weekends, and holidays?

24/7 service is available. After-hours may cost more than the daytime $89 diagnostic; you'll hear the fee before dispatch. That fee is not applied to the repair. Repair work is quoted before it starts, and we give you options to choose from.
